Topic: EVERY MEMBER, A BIBLE STUDENT (7)
Text: Jeremiah 23:29
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)
I have been explaining to you the power and centrality of the Word of God for the past few weeks. So if you have not started positioning yourself to be a Bible student, you better start on time.
Jeremiah 23:29 (KJV): “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
There you see two symbols of the word of God: a fire and a hammer. As a fire, it is a great purifier. When you go to the goldsmiths, you find them using fire. Fire removes impurities. The Bible is a fire to refine. The Word is also like a hammer. It strengthens people’s lives and helps you crush anything that wants to block your way. Hammer to break even the hardest hearts.
The Bible tells us in James 1 that the Bible is a mirror to reflect. It also tells us in 1 Peter 1 that the Word of God is a seed that multiplies. It tells us in Psalms 119 that the Word is a lamp to our feet. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word is a sword that cuts to pieces.
The Bible also tells us that the word of God is spiritual food to nourish our souls—milk for the babies, bread for the hungry, water for the thirsty, and honey for the journey in the desert.
Somebody wrote a poem a long time ago that says:
“How readest thou?
It is one thing to read the Bible through,
It is another thing to read, learn and do,
Some read it with design to learn to read,
But to the subject, they pay little heed,
Some read it as a duty once a week,
but no instruction from the Bible seek,
While others read it with little care,
with no regard to how they read nor hear,
Some read to bring themselves into repute,
by showing others they can dispute,
while others read because their neighbours do,
to see how long it will take to read it through,
Some read it for the wonders that are there,
How David killed a lion and a bear,
while others read with uncommon care,
hoping to find contradiction there,
Some read it but it does not speak to them,
But to the people of Jerusalem,
once some people read with fake spectacles in their eyes,
They just see things as people see in the world,
and they understand very little what they read,
Some even try to bend passages to make it suit themselves,
Some read it to teach others, but not to teach themselves,
But read it prayerfully, and you will see that
although men contradict God’s word,
but they agree that what the early Bible prophets wrote is happening in our days.”
This is a poem that somebody wrote so many years ago. The Bible is a wonderful book. It is full of wonders.
- The first wonder is the fact that it cannot be destroyed. The indestructibility of the Bible is a wonder. Emperors have tried to destroy it. Fools have tried to discredit it. People have tried to burn it to keep people from looking at it, but it remains indestructible. It is a wonder. I am telling you all this so you can become a friend of the Bible.
- The second wonder of the Bible is the wonder of its prophetic accuracy. There are words in scripture that you can see happening in daylight. “In the last days, men shall be lovers of their own selves, boasters, and ingrates. In the last days, evil men and seducers shall wax stronger and stronger”. When the disciples came to show Jesus the beauty of the temple in Jerusalem, He told them, “Do you see this temple? A time is coming when there shall not be one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.” It happened exactly like that. Those who came to destroy it broke it down brick by brick to cart away all the minerals in between them. Prophetic accuracy.
- The wonder of its absolute honesty. If something is wrong, it will say so. If it is right, it will say so. You would have expected that the Bible would not write certain things about certain people, but it did. When David committed his adultery, the Bible wrote about it. When Solomon married 700 wives, the Bible wrote about it.
- The wonder of its historical accuracy, which archaeologists are now discovering to be true.
- The wonder of its amazing circulation. The Bible is still the world’s best seller. There is no book that has beaten the Bible in sales.
- The wonder of its divine revelation. Men who walked with God, men who moved with God, men who understood God are lovers of the Bible.
- The wonder of its freshness. You could read it yesterday and have gotten some light. By the time you start reading it today, it will give you fresh light. It could be the same passage, but it is talking to you differently today.
- The wonder of its amazing unity. The books are interconnected and united, written by over 20 men over many years. Many of them never met each other, but the book is united.
- The wonder of its unique teaching, that it teaches you about life, what to do, and what not to do.
- The wonder of its power in the lives of men. There was a man called Bramin Scholar, a professor of philosophy and science. One day, he saw someone in the marketplace preaching about the virgin birth of Jesus by Mary. He said, “What rubbish is this man talking about?” At that time, he did not know much about the Bible, so he was angry. He spent 13 years studying the Bible because he wanted to contradict what that man was saying.
After 13 years of studying the scriptures, he started looking for the man who preached 13 years ago to say that what the man was describing was little in comparison to what the Bible described it as. The power of the word of God changed that man totally.
- The wonder of its power to save. It saves people, and the majority of great people in history are known to be Bible believers.
- The wonder of its scientific accuracy leaves scientists wondering. For example, man used to believe that the earth stood on a large animal or giant called Hercules. But if they had bothered to study the Bible, they would have known that many years ago, the Bible says that the earth is floating.
It was not until 1650 AD that men discovered that the earth is floating, whereas it is in Job 26:7. It is there, but the scientists did not know this until later.
Job 26:7 (KJV) says: “He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.”
It was later geographers discovered that different planets are roaming around the sun like a big ball. It is in the Bible, we see in Hebrews 11:3 that the earth is made up of some simple compositions. It was later that scientists discovered atoms. Men argued seriously about the shape of the earth. They even thought that if you walk far enough, you would fall off somewhere.
Someone who suggested in those days by saying, “I think this earth is a circle” was killed. Whereas if they read scripture, the Bible had said many years ago that the shape of the earth is a circle.
Isaiah 40:22a (KJV) says: “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth.”
Astronomers did not find this out until much later. It is on record that the man who started to study oceanography got the inspiration from Psalms 8:8, where the Bible talks about the paths of the sea. So the man wondered. As we have main roads on land, the scripture is saying there are also paths in the sea. If you have ever travelled to that place where people enter glass containers and descend into the sea, you will be amazed to see the main roads and paths. You will see strange fishes you have never seen on land. All these radio and telephone waves we are talking about now; the Bible has already talked about it in Job 38.
The Bible was also the first book to give the laws of hygiene.
Leviticus 15:13 (KJV) says: “And when he that hath an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.”
Here you see the law of hygiene. The Bible also first warned us against eating contaminated food.
Exodus 22:31 (KJV) says: “And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.”
All the things that are happening now that people are trying to address and work upon, the Bible warned already in Leviticus 7 about the dangers of eating fat. It is now that people are discovering that there are good and bad fats.
Leviticus 7:22–24 (KJV): “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat. And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn with beasts, may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.”
If you take a careful study of scripture, you will find some animals that the Bible says we should eat and not eat. And the Bible has reasons for that. It is now that scientists are discovering why the Bible says we should eat some and not others. During COVID-19, they were talking about quarantine. But the Bible is the first book that talks about it in Lev 13:46. That is the origin of quarantine.
Leviticus 13:46 (KJV) “All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.”
And if you study the book of Genesis, you see that God, in His wisdom, first created light, then water, then soil, then plant life. He did not create plants before light because plant will need light. It is after He had put all these on ground, He then created man.
So you can see the wonder of the scientific accuracy of the Bible. I could go on and on for the next hour, but it is important for you to know the book you are carrying in your hand.
- The Bible gives you a chance to see how men chose and the results of their choices. There is a contrast between Abraham and Lot’s choice of Sodom.
Moses’ choice over the riches of Egypt is another. Joseph’s choice in the prison house of Potiphar made him the Prime Minister. Daniel’s choice to not want to eat the King’s food gave him leverage in the country. Paul became a glorious Apostle when he chose his lot with the early Christians.
Christ made a marvellous choice when he set His face towards Jerusalem at the garden of Gethsemane, at the judgement hall, to die for our sins. Whereas, Adam’s choice cost him Eden. Esau’s choice cost him his birthright. Achan’s choice to steal cost him his life, family, and animals. Absalom’s choice cost him his life. Saul’s choice cost him his kingdom. Judas’ choice cost him his apostleship. Caleb and Joshua chose well, and they were able to make it to the promised land. Jonah’s first choice nearly shipwrecked him and killed him and the crew.
This book is a book of wonders that will make you aware of the best choices in life. It says, “I place before you life and death. Choose life that thou mayest live.”
