Topic: YOUR TROUBLES AND YOUR ATTITUDE
Text: Psalms 34:17, 19; 9:9; Proverbs 17:22
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)

Psalms 34:17 (KJV) says: “The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

It did not say ‘the sinners’, it said ‘the righteous.’”

Psalms 34:19 (KJV) also says: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

The same idea is taken in Psalms 9.”

Psalms 9:9 (KJV) says: “The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.”

Proverbs 17:22 (KJV) says: “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”

Beloveth: Listen and listen really hard this morning. It is not possible to run away from problems. There is no place you can run to that trouble cannot find you. All of life itself is trouble, and if you are a careful reader of the Bible, one important fact you can pick up from all men of God is that they all got into trouble, but they got out. So if you are looking for a problem-free existence, you are having a fraudulent dream. No one is immune to trouble, and troubles and problems have no regard for anyone. Like I always say to many of us here, a problem-free life is only available at the cemetery.

So whether you like it or not, God will always leave a challenge in your life that you have to conquer. Life itself is a process of solving problems, and every problem to you as a believer is a miracle in disguise. God Himself will not deliver you from problems, but He will deliver you in problems. Your problems can make you better or bitter. Your problems can build you up or break you. But the truth is that every problem has a lifespan, and God, in His infinite mercies, does not reveal everything at the same time; He reveals some and hides some.

He works line upon line, precept upon precept, and by the time you begin to sit down and calculate the wheel on which life runs, you find out that problems are springboards to progress and growth. Whether you are born again or spirit-filled, to every life, a little bit of rain of trouble will fall, whether you like it or not. And you cannot be victorious if you are not in any battle. You cannot begin to give testimony if you have not passed through a test. But the truth is this: whatever condition you find yourself in now is not as important as your attitude. What matters is not what happens in you, not to you.

WHAT IS AN ATTITUDE?
The kind of attitude we mean that a Christian should have is:

  • the ability to remain optimistic even in uncertain times.
  • Your ability to see challenges as opportunities, not as something that has come to kill you.
  • Your ability to see your setbacks as temporary inconveniences.
  • Your ability to welcome changes.
  • Your ability to have a posture that is not upset by surprises.

So, your actions and attitude reveal:

  • who you really are,
  • your outlook towards life,
  • your disposition,
  • your mental state,
  • your mindset.

These are deep areas of our lives that we need deep prayers to address because in these areas, the enemy has sent some people into concrete. They need the hammer of God’s power to break that concrete. Immediately something happens to some people, their first attitude is negative. If they feel sick, any symptom they see is death. If they wrote an exam and they feel like they did not do well, their first thought is failure. More than anything, that is what kills some people in the hospital.

There are some people that the enemy is telling that certain things will not be possible for them, and they are agreeing with him. Life itself is a battle of attitude.

Your attitude can:

  • make or break you,
  • heal or hurt you,
  • make you plenty of friends or plenty of enemies,
  • make you happy or very miserable,
  • make you a success or failure.

There is power in attitude. Next to surrendering your life to Jesus, deliverance of attitude is the next deliverance some people need. There are some people that show a nonchalant attitude to everything about life. Even in the house of God, they show that nonchalant behaviour; they are not bothered or concerned about anything happening. That your attitude represents your disposition. The reason you have a bad attitude is because you have a bad attitude inside of you. Your attitude determines the failure or success of every relationship in your life.

Let me ask you a question: If I bring a bottle to the altar here and put some water in it, and I do not close it properly and then I begin to shake it and water pours out, why is water pouring out? It is because there is water inside. If there is no water, inside, no matter how hard I shake it, it will not come out. So when people are squeezed, what comes out is that attitude inside of them. This is a very serious matter, and you need to understand this very well.

There is a difference between two people travelling in a vehicle. The driver pressed the brake sharply, and the person in a priestly garment shouted, “Ye!” while the other person shouted, “Blood of Jesus!” It is what is inside of you that comes out when you are squeezed. When many are in trouble, they tend to weep, be sad, be sorrowful, exercise self-pity, become hysterical, and curse and shout; some abuse God and say it is unfair, some have suicidal thoughts, and some become slaves of false prophets, and some forsake God for idols and native doctors. There have been many like that who felt that God was too slow, so they went back to their native doctors.

Now, they are back again doing multiple deliverances. Some are downcast, mournful, agitated, and withdrawn, not talking to people, complaining, and murmuring; some stop coming to church; some magnify the problems; some resign themselves to fate; some will be discouraged to the point of giving up. All these are attitudinal problems. That is why the Bible says, “A merry heart doeth good like medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” The person just gets dried up even without fasting because of bad attitude.

This is an area we need to work on that is deep inside people’s lives. Attitude is one difference among human beings that makes a big difference. That big difference is whether your attitude is negative or positive.

What I am saying here this morning is that our happiness or success depends not so much on the problems we face but on how we respond to those problems.

Read your Bible very well. If people had cause to really complain against God, I believe Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had a reason. God was not sleeping when Nebuchadnezzar raided their country.

God allowed Nebuchadnezzar to carry their parents and themselves. God allowed Nebuchadnezzar to waste their king and his children before his eyes after removing his two eyes. It was a terrible war crime. These boys had a right to say, “We serve God, but look at us. We are in the land of bondage. Why serve him now?” But they had a positive attitude. They said, “O king, we will not bow to this idol no matter what. The God whom we serve is able to deliver us from your hand and from the fiery furnace. But if He decides not to deliver us, no problem.” Their attitude.

A positive attitude will:

  • remove the dust from our minds and motivate us to accept the challenges ahead,
  • allow us to choose action instead of withdrawal,
  • allow us to choose growth instead of stagnation,
  • will allow us to choose courage instead of fear,
  • will allow us to choose encouragement instead of despair,
  • will allow you to see the good in every situation.

They took Paul and Silas and gave them a serious beating when God asked them to go there. They were dragged on the floor and thrown into the innermost cell. Those men had the right to say, “God, we are serving you. See what has happened to us now.” But their attitude had received deliverance. The Bible says that at midnight, they began to sing praises.

When your attitude is bad, then you handle your trouble wrongly. You mess up yourself and so many lives.

When there is a problem and what you do is:

  • to withdraw, negative attitude.
  • Fighting your wife or husband, negative attitude.
  • Drinking or smoking, negative attitude.
  • Getting yourself worried to the point of being sick, negative attitude.
  • Overdose of drugs to sleep or relax, negative attitude.
  • decide to die, negative attitude.
  • Begin to get confused, negative attitude.
  • Get very insulting, negative attitude.
  • Cry all day long, negative attitude.
  • Begin to drive recklessly, negative attitude.
  • Begin to overeat, negative attitude.
  • Begin to neglect family responsibilities, negative attitude.
  • Begin to entertain just any man or woman from anywhere because you could not get a spouse on time, negative attitude.
  • Refuse to sleep when you are not doing vigil; negative attitude.
  • Making sarcastic statements, negative attitude.
  • Begin to break and destroy properties, negative attitude. I know a man that was quarrelling with his wife, and he used to play the guitar. The wife took it and broke it on his head, then he looked around to see whatever thing the wife had bought in the house. He saw that the most expensive thing she had bought was the large television set. So he carried it and smashed it on the floor. A negative attitude.
  • Displaying violent anger, negative attitude.
  • Bitterness against people you think have what you do not have, negative attitude.
  • become irritable and moody, negative attitude.
  • Suspending your service for the Lord, negative attitude.
  • Backsliding, negative attitude.
  • Wearing worldly dressing, negative attitude.
Attaching fake fingernails to your nails, negative attitude.
  • Consulting beggarly powers, negative attitude.
  • Attending society parties and going to events you never used to go to before. These are all negative attitudes.

Beloveth, you can completely alter your life by your attitude. That attitude is within your control. You are responsible for how you react to disappointment and how you allow things to control your life. In this world, happiness in life is a choice. Happiness is determined by 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you handle it. Attitudes are secret powers working 24 hours a day for good or bad. Even excellence itself is not a skill or talent; it is an attitude. So, it is not your position, beloved, but your disposition to that condition.

HOW DO WE DEVELOP THE KIND OF ATTITUDE GOD WANTS?

  1. Begin to learn to speak positive words: Notice that I said ‘learn,’ because speaking positively is something you learn by practice. It does not come to anybody naturally. The Bible says, “As in Adam, all died.” So the dead people from Adam cannot speak anything positively. It is easier to talk negatively, criticise, and talk down on people’s work. Many of us do that easily without much thinking. Negative words, negative comments, and criticism just flow like water from the mouths of some people.

So you need to learn positive speaking. When you begin to speak it, you may first sound like a stranger to yourself. You could feel, “What is this I am saying now?” I dare you to carry out an experiment. To everyone you meet, begin to say something positive to them. Very soon, you begin to create an atmosphere of love and power around you. The words you speak will create an atmosphere for you. Positive words create a positive atmosphere and vice versa.

  1. No matter what happens to you, look for the good in it, and you will find it. You are not acting blind to the negatives, but you refuse to dwell on them. People tend to find what they are looking for, whether negative or positive. You can look at the land of your life and only see the giants. But you can also decide to see the stones of David.
  2. Take charge of your thought life. If you put in good thoughts by putting God’s word into your mind, it will come out in your speech. Fix your thoughts on what is good and right. Filter out the garbage from your thoughts. Feed yourself with the word of God. That way, you have a positive attitude.
  3. Displace destructive and satanic attitude with Christ-like attitude. Do that by your walk as a Christian and with prayer.

Displace:

  • disbelief with belief.
  • Dryness with feeding at the river of life.
  • Disarray with order.
  • Divorce spirit with the spirit of loyalty.
  • The spirit of disunity with unity.
  • Doubt with stable confidence of answers to your prayers.
  • Derogatory speaking to speeches that move people forward. Rather make edifying comments.
  • Disloyal statements with actions and words of loyalty.
  • Attitude of infirmity with attitude of healing.

All these you can do through prayers. And this is one area we need to work on very well. When the devil begins to blow his trumpet and you begin to scream and shout and jump, he will be encouraged to do more damage to you.

● I pray that the Lord will help us in the name of Jesus.

Winners always act as if it is impossible to fail. And it has been well said: If you think you cannot succeed, you are probably right, because that attitude will eventually bring failure.
