Topic: BECOMING YOUR OWN DELIVERANCE MINISTER (5)
Text: Luke 1:74-75, Obadiah 1:17, Colossians 1:12-14, Isaiah 49:24-25
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)
Luke 1:74-75 (KJV) says, “That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.”
Apart from other major things this scripture is telling us, the real message here is this: you cannot serve God without fear, in holiness and righteousness, if you are not delivered out of the hands of your enemies. Meaning that without holiness and deliverance, there is no possessing of possession (Obadiah 1:17).
We have been looking at this topic for a while now. The Bible says, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
God is looking for you to become your own personal instrument of healing and deliverance. It is important you understand this. We have been telling you the advantages of personal deliverance, which:
- Keeps you from getting sick,
- Strengthens your spiritual life,
- Removes the seed of the enemy, as you are taking out what they are putting in.
- Will free you from evil attacks and control.
Now, what are the ways to effect personal deliverance?
You could get to a situation where there is no pastor to help you, nobody to call, and you are on your own, and you need to take action. That is part of why we are studying this.
There are twenty-one ways to effect personal deliverance:
- Absolute repentance: The first message to be preached in any deliverance ground is the message of repentance, because for the enemy to come against you and succeed, there must be a ladder, and the major ladder is sin. Once that sin is still in place, you create an airport where the enemy can land. By simply repenting from that sin, you take the ladder off the leg of the enemy. So repentance and salvation are the first leg in deliverance.
Colossians 1:12-14 (KJV) says, “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”
It is useless preaching deliverance to someone who has not transferred his allegiance from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. The position of the person will be worse because the Bible says that if an unclean spirit leaves a person’s life, it does not go far. It will still be checking to see whether he has let down his guard. If the spirit finds that the person is not doing anything about safeguarding his soul, Matthew 12 tells us that the spirit will now bring in seven more wicked spirits to enter the person.
So, it is better to leave the person with the one demon he has than to chase out the one demon and seven more wicked ones come back. It was in 1981. They rushed a lady to our flat at the point of death, the only child of the mother, and the mother was crying uncontrollably. I started to pray. After praying for about five minutes or so, a voice spoke from her mouth, “Man of God, if you say we should leave, we will leave. But we will come back. Because she is a fornicator, and when she fornicates, we will come back.” So that fornication was a ladder. She needed to repent from that sin.
The Bible talks about two categories of captives. It said that some are:
- Lawful captives.
- Unlawful captives.
Isaiah 49:24-25 (KJV) says: “Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.”
- So, there are some that are the prey of the mighty; they are unlawful captives. When we say ‘unlawful captives,’ we are talking about people who, because of ignorance, or prayerlessness, or other kinds of things they are doing wrong, the enemy takes advantage of them and overpowers them. The enemy is like an armed robber in this case.
He goes in because they are ignorant, prayerless, talk too much, think too much, and worry and worry. So he goes in and captures them. The captivity is not necessarily because they have really sinned, but because they are ignorant. They have no right to be there.
- These ones are in captivity because of their sins or inherited sins. That is why it is good to understand this very well so you can keep yourself away from attacks and pollution.
So the first thing in any deliverance is REPENTANCE. Repentance closes any door open to the enemy. I do not drink alcohol. So you cannot poison me with alcohol because I do not drink it. I do not wear a chain on my neck; I am not a prisoner. So you cannot inhabit the chain to harm me, simply because I do not wear it. I do not buy artificial fingernails, so the enemy cannot inhabit those things to harm me. And stop deceiving yourself by saying, “I will sanctify it and then use it.” Really? No, it is not everything you can sanctify. There are things dedicated to the devil. They belong to him. Nobody asked you to buy it or put it on. You now say, “I will sanctify it.” It is a lie. Nobody sent you to get it.
So again, repentance:
- closes the door open to the enemy.
- weakens the position of the enemy.
- Restores the authority of the believer. After that, you can start fighting back. Not that you are fighting” O God deliver me,” and the devil says, “Ah, you cannot deliver this one because if you deliver him, he will go back and commit more sin.” Or you say, “O God, heal me,” and the devil says, “You cannot heal this one. Once you heal him, he goes back to the sin again.” This is the principle behind repentance.
You need to repent. This is why when we are announcing for deliverance at prayer city, we say, “Come dressed decently,” because a lot of things that people put on introduce dangers into their lives. This is a very serious matter, and I want you to understand this very well. A person cannot cut off her hair, donate it to an idol she worships in Bangkok or Thailand, and say, “Idol, take this hair and let all my bad luck go away,” and then somebody takes the hair, polishes it, rebrands it, brings it to Africa or Nigeria, and you, a believer, buy it and put it on your head.
So you are putting something on your head that an idol has a hold on. And because your head is the symbol of your destiny, you bring your head under a demonic cover.
There is no amount of “I cover the hair with the blood of Jesus.” No, it has been dedicated. So when those things are gone, since you come as you are to deliverance ground, the enemy has no ladder with which to climb into your life. So repentance encourages and strengthens believers to fight back. If you are talking about personal deliverance, the first key matter is repentance.
To go into deliverance without repentance is like trying to fight God yourself. You are trying to receive deliverance when you want to retain what you are doing. This is the first key we must understand.
A lot of people rush to deliverance grounds when all they need to do is sit down, analyse their lives, find what they are doing wrong, repent from it, and see that the enemy has nothing to attack their lives with anymore. But if you are not ready for repentance and you are ready for enjoyment, the enemy keeps coming back.
And if, as a believer, you go back to the old sin you were committing before you got born again, then all the old problems that have gone will come back. So absolute repentance is the first key.
A lot of people go to church but are really not born again. They have not really surrendered their lives to Jesus. This is the major problem on the deliverance ground. People want deliverance, but they do not want to repent. Repentance is the foundation of everything. The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” You become a new creature, not refurbished or repainted. New!
Then the enemy looks at you and says, “This was not the person we were pursuing before. The former person is a dirty person. But this one is now clean. So let us back off.” Jesus said, “The prince of this world cometh and hath nothing in me.” The problem with us is that, at the time the prince of this world comes, he will find something in us, and that something is what keeps the enemy in position.
I am praying for somebody here today: Every power that has stubbornly refused to let you go, the power of God shall detach them this morning, in the name of Jesus.
So, beloveth, repentance is key. Do not go for deliverance if you are not ready to change your ways. Do not think the enemy will leave you alone if you still remain in any known sin. When you shout, ‘Let me go!’ they say, “We cannot let you go. You are in us, and we are in you.”.
Remember the story of that sister I told you about years ago. She would come to church as if she was dressed for a party, and then she would get to the door, clean all the makeup, and remove all her jewellery before entering, but the enemy was attacking her.
She prayed seriously one night before going to bed, and she had a dream. She saw some small creatures, and she knew they were demons. They started looking at her and laughing seriously. They said, “Everybody is binding; you too are binding.”. She got so angry, she shouted, “Get out of here; I remove you by fire, in Jesus’ name.” They said, “You cannot bind us or remove us. You are in us, and we are in you.” This was what changed her spiritual life totally. She became serious.
- The second key for effective personal deliverance is prayerfully searching for the root cause of your problems. Because, if you attack the problem from the root, it will go away. Prayerfully search by praying inquiry prayers. If you cry sincerely to the Lord, the Lord will expose the root, and then you will know how to attack from the root.
- Key number three is: engage in spirit-led fasting and prayers. Do not just wake up one morning and say, “I am going on 40 days of prayer and fasting.”. Any fast that is beyond 7 days dry, you need a directive from the Lord to embark on it. If you jump on any fast like that, you can do 40 days of dry fasting, and the problem still remains.
This is where we are going to stop this morning.
