Topic: O GOD, ARISE, AND DO A HARD THING FOR ME
Text: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 4, 6, 8-12; Joshua 5:2-5, 8-9
Minister: Dr Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)
2 Kings 2:1-2, 4, 6, 8-12 (KJV) “And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Beth-el. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth-el.”
“And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.”
“And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.”
“And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.”
It is interesting where the journey of Elijah and Elisha started again. Look at verse 1 again of the chapter.
2 Kings 2:1 (KJV) “And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.”
Let us follow up Gilgal a little bit. The children of Israel were about to enter into the promised land. But God was not about to let them enter into the promised land just like that. There were things He needed to offload from their lives. There were things in their lives He did not want them to take into Canaan. If God is taking you into your Canaan land, there are things He has to take away.
Joshua 5:2-5 (KJV) “At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time. And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt. Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.”
Joshua 5:8-9 (KJV) “And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.”
Gilgal is a place of offloading. That is where the journey of Elijah and Elisha started. When the Almighty wants to do something for you, your geographical location is not a liability at all. God said, “I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, who was, who is, and who is to come: the Almighty.” That is, God is the past, the present and the future. God is the beginning and the end, the start and finish, the beginning and conclusion.
He is a God of endless time, a God that recognises no limitation. We are here to pray, beloveth so that yesterday’s cloud will not cover tomorrow’s glory, so that the weight of today will not affect the sunshine of tomorrow, and so that all the year-in, year-out problems will die. So God decided to offload the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land.
Science does not create; science can only discover. And there are so many people who have been killed by the enemy who believe that they know, but they do not know anything. God cannot be subjected to laboratory experiments. I want you to understand this very well.
That our song says:
“All other gods, they are the works of men.
You are the only true God,
There is none like you.”
So much for that. Why did we go to this story of Elisha? There are plenty of good things you can learn from Elisha and how he received the hard thing from the Lord. He was a humble man, we agree. He was hard-working, we agree. But one thing about Elisha which you too need to imbibe so that God can do a hard thing for you is that Elisha refused to give up. Do not give up. Do not quit. A path with no obstacles leads nowhere. Without a struggle, there can be no progress. When you prosper, friends know you. But in adversity, you know who your friends are. Do not give up, because you develop courage during some difficult times.
Difficulty is the harsh nurse of greatness, and the best boxing partner you can have is adversity. Our ancient fathers said that it is where there is strong wind and storm that you find the strongest trees standing. As fire is the test of gold, adversity is the test of strong men and women. Whether the enemy likes it or not, nobody is finished when the person is defeated, but you are finished when you surrender.
● I decree that you will not surrender, but your enemies shall surrender, in the name of Jesus.
When the enemy is bringing problems your way, it means that your destiny is a shining one. The fact that you are here tonight in this meeting shows that God still has something for you because if you had experienced everything God wants you to experience, He would have taken you away. God did not allow the angels of death to catch you away because He still has something for you. The Bible says that if you are weak in the days of adversity, your strength is small. Do not quit. Do not give up. That is the major lesson of Elijah. “Stay here in Gilgal”, he said. “No.” “Stay here in Bethel,” he said. “No.” “Stay here in Jericho”, he said. “No”. Everything Elijah did to discourage him, he did not allow. He refused to give up.
● I see somebody here tonight: you will not give up; your enemies shall give up, in the name of Jesus.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO QUIT? To quit is:
- To fold your arms when the work has not finished.
- To stop boxing while your opponent is still hitting you hard.
- To depart from the field of play when the match is not over.
- To surrender to the enemy.
- To enrol in the school of despair.
- To write a courier letter to the school of failure.
- To discourage your angel of blessings. The angel is just about to reach you, but it is at that level you gave up.
- To lose sight of all that is bright in life.
- To cage yourself with the darkest gloom.
- To seek a path in darkness where no stars are shining.
- To allow frustration to take possession of your soul.
- To declare praise worship for your enemies.
- To become weak in the days of adversity.
- To lick the petrol in the tank of your destiny.
- To surrender to discouragement, depression, and defeat in the battles of life.
- To hand over your life steering wheel to the enemy.
- To fall into the dark hole of defeat.
- To write a courier letter to the backseat and to sink in the Red Sea of failure.
Do not quit; do not give up. This message is to so many people listening to me here tonight. A lot of people are so close to mighty breakthroughs, but there is something now disturbing them to quit, and once they stop, they have to start the marathon again. And so this is why you are hearing this message now. This is a prophetic message to many hearing me tonight. Do not quit. Do not give up. It is true that the doctors have said so many things. It is true that the lawyers have said their own.
The experts have looked at it and said, “This is not possible.” That is the truth. But it is not the fact. The fact is that they all do not have the last say. The person who has the last say is the One who said, “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too difficult for me?” The Bible says, “Ah! Lord God, thou hast made the heavens and the earth by thy outstretched arm, and nothing is too difficult for thee.” He says, “With man, this is impossible. But with God, all things are possible.” Say:
● O God, arise and do a hard thing for me in the name of Jesus.
One thing many do not realise is this: the best things in this world are always born or created at the worst times. Jesus was born in a manger, but now He is the King of kings and Lord of Lords. Because you were born in a manger does not mean you have to die in a manger. The Apostle Paul wrote all those wonderful epistles that we are reading in our Bible while he was in prison. That woman known as Florence Nightingale reorganised the hospitals in her country from her sickbed.
Those of you who know about science know about a French scientist known as Louis Pasteur. The man was partially paralysed when he found the cure for many diseases. That American president called Abraham Lincoln was born in abject poverty, but then he rose and led his nation through those dark years. One of the best prime ministers the United Kingdom ever had was called Winston Churchill. By the time he finished junior school, the teacher wrote in his card, “This boy is a celebrated dunce.” And what the teacher said was actually right.
So when the father saw it, he did not bother for him to attend university. He started trying to push him to military school. He still failed the entrance examination into military school once or twice before he got admitted. So, do not give up because things are tough now.
Tough times will breed tough people. There is one man called Glenn Cunningham. He was so badly burnt in a fire accident that his doctor said he would never walk again. But this man was the first human being to run one mile in less than four minutes, and he set a world record as far back as 1934.
One great musician was called Beethoven; he did many of his great musical pieces when he was partially deaf. So failure is never the end for a believer, and this is great news for you. That great scientist called Isaac Newton failed his mathematics examination. He was the lowest in his form, yet he rose and became what he became. So, things can go wrong. The road you are travelling on may be rough. There may be no money in your hand now. You may be struggling to smile, but the smile is not from within.
The enemies may be pursuing you here and there. Some may even be saying to you, “Why do you not give up? What have you got from Jesus?” If you need to rest, you can rest, but do not quit. Life is a mystery. Many of the successes you are seeing now are failures turned upside down. It is a terrible tragedy when somebody would have won his fight with one single blow, but because at the time he should have landed that blow, he gave up, and he lost. Because many of us cannot see into the spirit realm, many have prayed so many prayers, and the prayers have become termites inside the problems they are facing.
The termites had already finished eating the problem, and with just a single blow remaining for the problem to be over, they gave up. The devil should not allow you to say, “Well, I give up; I do not want to pray again.” Some will say, “I have been coming and coming and coming; let me try something else.” And the devil has a way of preparing a diversion for people. That time, he will take you to the wrong place, and the person will get into serious trouble. I want you to understand this very well.
I want you to know that if you quit, you make your enemies happy. If you allow a diversion, you make your enemies happy. When you are hit the hardest in the battle, when things seem hot, that is when you must not quit. The enemy will carry out his last battle; he will do his last crusade and carry out his last revival. Then he becomes very desperate. The desperation will now introduce an extra energy, and you will think, “Well, this battle is getting hotter!” It will get hot, and like a graph that goes up, it will then come down.
● There is somebody here today that will not give up, but your enemies shall give up, in the name of Jesus.
PRAYER POINTS.
- Satanic armed robbers, die in the name of Jesus.
- Tormenting authorities fighting me this year, expire, in the name of Jesus.
- Evil hands assigned to keep my destiny from shining, wither, in the name of Jesus.
- Powers pushing the candle of my destiny under the bed, you are liars: die, in the name of Jesus.
- Every bird of the air, assigned to eat the seed of my destiny, fall down and die, in the name of Jesus.
- Every bondage against my brain, break, in the name of Jesus.
- Thou messenger of affliction, carry your message back to the sender, in the name of Jesus.
- Horns of my father’s house, scattering my lifting, die, in the name of Jesus.
- My Father, my Father, my Father, you are the lifter of my head: lift me up, in the name of Jesus.
- Domestic witchcraft pressing down my head, die, in the name of Jesus.
- O God arise, and make me a mysterious wonder, in the name of Jesus.
