Topic: PETER’S SHORT PRAYERLORD, SAVE ME!
Text: Matthew 14:30
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)

Peter was on the sea, he walked on the water. He saw Jesus walking on the sea and asked “Can I come?” Jesus said “Come.” But then something happened.

Matthew 14:30 (KJV) says: “But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.”

This is the shortest prayer that Peter prayed in the scriptures. Peter prayed this prayer just as he was sinking in the water. He was scared. He was in great peril. So what he did was a cry. He did not just pray his prayer, he cried that prayer.

If there is anything we do, over which we cannot pray, we ought never to do those kinds of things. Any occupation you cannot pray over and you are engaged in; that is, you are doing an occupation over which you cannot pray, it is clear that the occupation is a wrong one.

The spirit of prayer is better even than the habit of prayer. When the spirit of prayer is upon you, you pray anywhere, anyhow, anytime. It is better to be able to pray at all times and seasons. That is what we call the spirit of prayer.

Something is very wrong if you go without prayer for an hour in a day. Not that you have to close your eyes and begin to pray loudly wherever you are, but prayer should be in your mouth, and in your heart.

Peter did not pre-pray, but the prayer was not too late. As long as you have a heart to pray, God has an ear to hear you. When you cry to God, sometimes the devil will tell you it is of no use. But the truth is that the habit of crying to God brings results. Bartimaeus cried and got results. What happened here was another cry by somebody. So the eternal words of the Psalmist is ever true:

“In the day that I cry, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me” (Psalms 56:9)

So when there is life, there is hope. Peter was in too great of a peril to put fine fine language in his prayer. He was so conscious of the danger of he was in, that he could not sit down to put his words together. The strong desire of the soul must be expressed in the simplest manner possible. That Peter’s prayer was brief, wonderfully comprehensive and can be adapted in any situation. And the prayer is very simple and straightforward. ‘Lord, save me.’

Can somebody shout this loud and clear:

  • Lord save me and I shall be saved. Lord heal me and I shall be healed.

So Peter went straight to the point, not beating about the bush. Many persons fail to receive answers to their prayers because they will not go straight. Just like blind Bartimaeus did not go straight, he kept saying “Have mercy upon me.”

Jesus said “Okay what exactly do you want me to do for you?” Peter’s prayer was a personal one, an urgent one, an effective one.

So prayer sometimes does not have to be long to be powerful.

“Lord, save me”
Meaning that:

  • Sometimes a single sentence of prayer can change destiny.
  • Sincere prayers are very effective.
  • Emergency situations require emergency prayers.
  • Whatever happens, prayer is believers’ first aid. When you do not see prayer as first aid, there is a problem.
  • Heaven recognises desperate prayers.
  • One prayer can rewrite your story.
  • Faith speaks when fear is shouting loud.

So, Peter’s prayer is short, simple, faith-driven, urgent, sincere, from the heart and acknowledges Jesus as Lord. “Lord, save me.”
