Topic: SILENCING WICKED VOICES
Text: Exodus 4:8, 1 Corinthians 14:10, Mark 10:46-49, 2 Kings 1:9-10
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)
In the book of Exodus 4, we read a strange scripture.
Exodus 4:8 (KJV) says: “And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.
It talks about the voice of the first sign, and the voice of the second sign. To you, they are not talking, but there is a voice coming out, there is a voice speaking.
1 Corinthians 14:10 (KJV) says, “There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.”
There are many kinds of voices speaking to us in the world, whether we like it or not. We hear many voices in our lives, both in the day and in the night. As humans, we are created to hear voices.
The Bible makes us understand that God also speaks. God has a voice. We human beings, too, speak and hear voices. The lamentable tragedy is that many of us hear the wrong voices, and sometimes when we hear the right one, we do not obey it. What a tragedy.
The purpose of voices is to direct our lives, advise us, counsel us, lead us, dominate us, redirect our lives or make us do what they want us to do. Voices speak within and without. Voices also speak around. They may be loud or quiet. The voices may even be in the dream. They may sound anonymous. It may be in the heart. The voices may be through books, plays, music, or lectures; they can speak to your heart, to your ears, and can advise you positively or negatively.
There are multitudes of voices now. The voice you listen to will determine your destiny.
The song says:
Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord,
And he said, “Here I am, send me”,
Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord,
And he said, “Here I am, send me”,
Here I am, send me, anywhere for you,
Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord,
And he said, “Here I am, send me”.
The voice that Isaiah heard, which was the voice of the Lord, changed his story and destiny forever. The voice you listen to will determine your destination in life.
Some women have listened to their friends and moved out of a marriage of destiny. Some men have listened to their friends, and they have sent away a woman of destiny. Where you are now is a result of the obedience of the voice you have been listening to.
What is happening in your life or state right now is due to the listening ears you gave to the voices speaking to you. That songwriter rightly said, “Saviour, may we hear your voice.” The voices you hear can bring prosperity or poverty and can bring peace, distraction, or destruction.
A voice says to you, “Try this.” You say, “But this is marijuana.” The voice says, “Just try it.” If you do not like it, leave it.” You listened to the voice and took it. Once, twice. You coughed. Water came out of your eyes. You dropped the marijuana.
The second day, another voice came to you and said, “What you tried yesterday, try it again,” and you picked it up and went from there to become somebody in bondage. You can hear physical or spiritual voices.
A man, after many years, had a baby boy. The naming ceremony was the next day. All of a sudden, they could not find him again. He had walked out at midnight. He disappeared. Police looked for him but could not find him. They did the naming ceremony without him.
17 years after, the wife joined us at MFM at Old Yaba Road, and we called one prayer, which we will pray just now.
The woman prayed like no man’s business. All of a sudden, in three days’ time, the man they had not seen for 17 years, whose baby was already 17 years old, just came back. They asked him, “Daddy, where have you been?” He replied, “Kaduna.” They asked again, “How did you get there?” He said, “I walked there.” They asked him, “What happened?” He said, ‘In the night, I heard a voice which said, “Get up, get out. People in your family do not dedicate baby boys. Get out!’” And he opened the door at midnight and kept walking. All because he heard a voice. So voices can be spiritual or physical. You can hear so many voices, but the choice to obey is yours.
Mark 10:46-47 (KJV) says: “And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.”
(For somebody to be screaming in the street so much that people complained of him disturbing them, it must have been loud.) That is why we say Bartimaeus did not say his prayers; he cried his prayers.
Mark 10:48 (KJV) says: “And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.”
(Their “shut up” ended up increasing his volume.)
Mark 10:49 (KJV) says: “And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.”
The same voices asking him to shut up started saying “Cheer up.” ”Be of good comfort’ means ‘cheer up.’ Why? He was not ready to joke with anybody. His face was angry; it had fire. They had to tell him, “Relax, calm down; he is calling you.”
Beloveth, every man’s destiny is shaped and influenced by voices. From birth till now, you have been hearing voices of your parents, teachers, friends, enemies, and above all, the voice of God. Some voices are destiny lifters, while some are destiny destroyers
Until you silence the wrong voices, your change may never come. Blind Bartimaeus was sitting by the roadside begging. He had been in darkness for years. One day, he heard that Jesus was passing by. He began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy upon me.” Immediately, other voices rose up. “Keep quiet!” “Shut up!” “Stop shouting!” “You are disturbing the master!”
If Bartimaeus had obeyed these voices, he would have died a blind man. But he cried even louder until Jesus stood still. That day, his change came because he silenced the wrong voices and lifted the right ones. This is a serious matter. He silenced the voices of darkness, the voices of limitation.
2 Kings 1:9-10 (KJV) says: “Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down. And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.”
(They said, “Come down.” He replied, “Ehn ehn. Instead of me coming down, let the fire of God come down.” There are voices like that too, shouting day and night: ‘Go down.’ It is you that will say, “No, I am not going down. I will go up, and you will go down.” You have to respond to those voices. Can someone sufficiently angry in the spirit raise up his voice and shout:
- Voices asking me to go down, you are liars: die, in the name of Jesus.
Child of God, your life will always attract voices whenever your breakthrough is close, whenever a change is near. Before David faced Goliath, the voice of his own brother Eliab arose to discourage him. It said, “You, this boy, why are you so forward? I know it is because of the battle you came to.”
The voice of his brother was the negative voice to discourage him. When Nehemiah was rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. Sanballat and Tobiah were the voices mocking him. Before Jesus went to the cross, Peter’s voice rose to discourage Him and distract His attention. Every time a good change is about to happen in every life, contending voices will appear.
There are voices of:
- Discouragement saying, “You cannot make it. Others have tried and failed. Why are you wasting your time?”
- Fear that whisper “You will not succeed. Better give up now before you are disgraced or disappointed.”
- The past, reminding you of your mistakes and your weaknesses.
- Mockery, laughing at your faith and your efforts.
There are also satanic voices, like the serpent in Eden, speaking deception to derail your destiny.
When we were in primary school, there was a rage of kidnappers kidnapping children. Our parents warned us not to talk to strangers. If strangers called, we were told not to answer.
When the kidnappers noticed that the children had become wise and were no longer answering, they bought a sweet called ‘goody-goody’ to lure children with it. Some children listened to that voice of goody-goody, and we never saw them again. If you do not silence these evil voices, they will silence your destiny. But if you can rise up in faith like Blind Bartimaeus beyond the voice of men, then heaven will stand still for you like it stood still for Blind Bartimaeus. The hearts of many are so noisy, and that is why we ask people to shout during prayers, because the shouts silence them.
Your greatest battle is not with physical enemies, but with voices. Some are external voices around you, while some voices are internal, in your heart. When you learn to shut down the voices and tune your heart to God, your change will manifest suddenly. Try and understand this very well.
There was a time some white missionaries came to Nigeria. One of them was 51 years old. They were with Nigerian ministers who they cracked jokes with. One of the Nigerians asked one of the missionaries, “Are you married?” The white man said, “Not yet.” The Nigerian said, “At 51, you are not married. Will you ever marry? The face of the white man changed, and he said, “Brother, I bind those words; I will marry.” They understood the principle of voices.
HOW DO YOU SILENCE EVIL VOICES?
You silence them:
- With the word of God, declaring what God has said about you. That is why we encourage Bible memorisation and Bible meditation. If you have been born again for one year, you need to know a minimum of 52 verses in your head.
- With personal prayers, refusing to give up until your changes come.
- With the blood of Jesus, which speaks better things than any contrary voice.
- By separating yourself from people whose words weaken your faith and do not encourage your growth in God. You said that you found a husband, but all he does is hug you and rub his hands all over you. He will never say things like “Let us pray.” “What did they teach in church yesterday?” or even ask you to read a Bible verse. You have not found a husband; you found ‘touch-and-go.’
- By prophetic declaration, speaking your change into reality until it becomes flesh.
Beloveth, the change you desire is possible, but the wrong voices must be silenced. Blind Bartimaeus silenced the people around him. David silenced his brother. Nehemiah silenced his mockers. Jesus silenced Peter. What about you? Which voices must be silenced in your life today? Let me tell you one deep secret: When you learn to cry louder than the voices around you, your miracle will stand still and your story will change.
