Topic: EVERY MEMBER, A BIBLE STUDENT (4)
Text: Hebrews 4:12, Psalms 119:11
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)

I have been explaining to you for a while, the centrality of the word of God and how important it is for you to become biblically literate so you are not swept away by every wind of doctrine.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) says: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Bible shows us the way to go to heaven. God is the author of the Bible, and only the truth contained in this Bible will lead people to true happiness. The world is not a happy place. To find happiness, the Word of God contains what will lead people to true happiness. So whenever the world of somebody is dark, the place to go is the Bible.

This is why all kinds of attacks have been waged against the Bible but have not succeeded. All the barbaric vandalism against the Bible, civilised scholarship against the Bible, all the people trying to discredit the Bible came to naught because it is the word of God.

The Bible is God’s book of promises. Unlike the books of men, it does not change or get out of date. This is why if you find somebody or a believer who hates the Bible, there is nothing to do to help such a believer. The Bible will not only inform you, but it will also empower you to operate in the supernatural. Nobody can be smarter than the Bible; it has exposing power.

And so I began to explain to you how you can be a Bible student, and we discussed the following weeks ago:
1. Read that Bible aloud privately to yourself.
2. Discuss that Bible.
3. Handcopy the Bible.
4. You must study the Bible, because in studying it, you are asking the Word of Life to flow into your life.
5. Memorise the Bible: Memory verses of scriptures help tremendously. The Bible says in Psalms 119:11 (KJV): “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Let the Word of God enter your heart, and the way it can be in your heart is if you memorise it. If you memorise scripture, it is a foundational exercise that will move you forward. People give all kinds of excuses why they cannot memorise scriptures, but all the excuses hold no water.

If you are struggling to put it in your head and it goes out, do not be too surprised. Read the parable of the sower. The Bible says that the seed is the word of God, and the devil comes to take it out. Many people memorise all kinds of things.

There are some people that you can ask to tell you all the football players of various football clubs, and they can tell you from up to down. But if you say to them, “Tell me the names of the 12 apostles,” there will be serious problems. That means the devil is allowing you to retain that one but removing the one that will prosper you. If you are struggling to memorise scriptures, if you begin to read that passage aloud three times in the morning, three times in the afternoon, and three times at bedtime three times a week, you will find out that you have a surprising grip on that word of God.

That is why we talk about meditating on the scriptures. Meditating on scripture means reciting a word of scripture word for word from the Bible. You put the passage in your mind and begin to reshuffle it. Bible memorization is vital to your development and growth as a Christian. There is no escape. The Bible says, “In the beginning was the Word….” That means the Word of God should always be at the foundation of what you do, because it is the foundation of everything that God does.

All scripture is given by inspiration, so when you memorise scripture, you are becoming like the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was full of memorised scriptures. So you too must memorise scriptures like your Lord Jesus. Anytime the Jews came to Jesus and said ‘it is written’, He too would reply with “it is written”. During the temptation of the Lord Jesus Christ, all three temptations that the devil brought, His answer to everything was “it is written.” Once you know what is written and have put it in your mind, it will work for you for the rest of your life.

Let me tell you one secret: the scripture you memorise will guide you for the rest of your life. Jesus quoted scriptures to Satan. That was his main defence against temptation. Today, many religions in the world are emphasising the memorization of their holy books. Young men belonging to these religions sit down for hours memorising entire texts and chapters of their own holy books.

If you find some radical things going on among some religions now, part of what has caused it is the dedicated memorization they have done, and they are now ready to die for that faith. We must memorise our Holy book. I expect you, as somebody who has been born again for one year, to at least be able to recite fifty-two scriptures. You keep reading it to yourself, and it is becoming part and parcel of you, and that makes you a Bible student.

6. Personalise that Word of God: Personalising the Word is something that brings that Word to bear in your life. Whether by reading or reciting it, it brings blessings into your life when you insert your name into a passage. When the Bible says, “I shall not die but live to declare the Word of God,” you put your name there. The Bible says that “God so loved the world.” If you remove ‘the world’ and put your name there, it strengthens your spirit. It empowers you.

7. Sing the Word of God: There are many songs that are directly taken from scripture. The more you sing them, the more they go into your spirit man and begin to do wonders in your life, and the more they bless your spirit man.

An example is:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceaseth,
His mercies never come to an end,
They are new every morning, new every morning,
Great is thy faithfulness O Lord,
Great is thy faithfulness.

That is taken directly from scriptures. Another is:
Who is like unto thee, O LORD?
Who is like unto thee, O LORD?
among the gods, who is like thee?
Glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

The joy of the Lord is my strength,
The joy of the Lord is my strength,
The joy of the Lord is my strength,
The joy of the Lord is my strength.

These are all words from the scriptures. It is also another good way to memorise scriptures when you sing them.

8. Display the Word of God: Display it. Some passages are just so wonderful that people can write them out and put them on their walls. They may be promises. They may be words like “As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord”. It may be what is written in Isaiah 40:31. As you wake up every morning and keep starting at it, that is how you become a Bible student.

9. Share the Word: Any chance you have to talk to others about the Word of God, use that opportunity well so that, as the Lord is backing up what you are doing, it is blessing you yourself.
