Topic: PERSONAL SPIRITUAL CHECKUP
Text: 2 Corinthians 13:5, 1 Corinthians 11:31, Isaiah 59:6-8
Minister: Dr. Daniel Olukoya (G.O. MFM Worldwide)

2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJV) says, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”

Another version says, “Examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realise that Jesus Christ is in you, unless you have failed the test?”

Another version says, “Examine yourself as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourself. Do you not yourself know that Jesus Christ is in you, unless indeed you are disqualified?”

The Amplified version says, “Test and evaluate yourselves to see whether you are in the faith and living your lives as [committed] believers. Examine yourselves [not me]! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves [by an ongoing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test and are rejected as counterfeit?”

A lot of people come to church, but the church is not in them. They say they are members of MFM, but MFM is not in them.

You do not find MFM members fighting on the street, being arrested for fraud or in all kinds of terrible places. Some come to church, but they know themselves that they are cold in heart.

Some are very active in church but do not pray when they go home. Their spiritual exercise stops when they leave church until the next Sunday.

For some people, before we share the grace, they are gone. I do not know where they are running to. They are so quick to run away from their father’s house. Some sing and work in the house of God but are spiritually unserious. Some are very active but spiritually drifting away.

Some are practising carefully concealed sins. So this is a command from God that we should conduct a personal spiritual checkup. Examine yourself. Do not pamper yourself.

When we say we “examine yourself”, you carry out an honest and brutal examination of your spiritual life and yourself before God.

It means allowing the Holy Spirit to search our hearts. It means you should correct yourself now before it is too late, before it becomes destruction.

I do not know how they teach in primary schools now. But in our days in primary school, the teacher would write arithmetic sums on the board and ask us to answer the questions.

After we finish answering and they collect our papers, he will mark them. Then there is a section called “Correction”, where he goes to the board and writes out the correct answers against the questions.

What is the purpose of that? They are showing us so we know what we missed. It is not what you get right that makes you fail the exam, but what you got wrong.

So the purpose of correction is to know what you are getting wrong. The psalmist says, “Search me, O Lord…” You need to schedule a quiet time. This is practical now. Turn off distractions. Keep the phone and visitors away. Sit down quietly. Invite the Holy Spirit and say, “Lord, show me myself.”

And if you continue the prayer in a systematic form, the Holy Spirit will talk to you, and your duty is to repent and make corrections. This is not a rush-rush kind of activity. Sit down, take it systematically and pick them out one by one.

It is like someone watching TV or playing music, and because you want to see something clearly, you press the pause button to see it well. Then you press “play” again. You need to sit down, press the pause button, and examine yourself.

WHY DO WE NEED TO CARRY OUT THIS KIND OF SPIRITUAL EXERCISE?

  1. It is a wise activity because of the constant pollution of the world. This world is polluting people in a massive and terrible way. In those days, it was boys they used to bring and say that they were smoking Indian hemp and they now had mental illness. Or “he is doing drugs and he is running mad”.

But the tragedy of this generation is that girls are now part of this. And the second tragedy is they are overtaking the boys.

I want you to understand this very well. Many send their cars for servicing, but they treat themselves the way they will not treat their cars. You are not checking things up. You say they are attacking you, but you did not check the door that is open to them.

  1. It will show you how much you have allowed God to work in your life. It is good to do it NOW.
  2. It shows how much you have grown spiritually. “Am I still where I was last year? Am I still with the same fire?” If everyone in this church were operating at the same level of fire, where would the church be today?
  3. To bring to light the dark areas of our lives which the enemy wants you to hide.
  4. To reveal any falsehood in our lives. A lot of believers are living fake lives and think God does not see them. Fake activities, fake behaviours. One leg in church, one leg outside. One manner of dressing in church, another manner of dressing outside. One manner of speaking in church, another manner of dressing outside.
  5. To locate areas needing healing in our lives and hold them to the Lord for treatment. “Father, I am sick in this area; heal me.” But if you do not examine yourself, you will not know. If you do not invite the Holy Spirit to show you, you may not find out.
  6. To enable us to receive divine medicine for our battered spirits.
  7. To enable us to see any warning signs or hidden dangers.
  8. To enable us to enjoy spiritual health. If we are to enjoy spiritual prosperity, we need to allow ourselves to be looked at by God. We must subject ourselves to divine search which pierces the very depths.

The psalmist says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” Ultrasound scans and X-ray scans that doctors use show internal organs and their state. When God is allowed to carry out a scan on our lives, what happens to us when we correct them is revival.

  1. To expose to us our need for spiritual surgery and healing.
  2. To enable us to sharpen our spiritual swords where they have become dull. It is not a good testimony that in 2023, you had spirit husband attacks; had the same attack in 2024; and in 2025, the same spirit husband is still pursuing you. You need to carry out a check on what is opening the door to allow this evil man to come into your life.
  3. To enable us to put right some of the wrong things we have done. Like I said earlier, it is not what you get right that is the problem but what you are getting wrong.
  4. To enable us to see our needs and offer apologies where necessary and be reconciled.

So in this kind of spiritual check-up exercise, three things are required:

  1. Honesty. Be honest with your life. Do not deceive yourself. You can only deceive others.
  2. Sincerity.
  3. Determination. Get a quiet place, sit down, press your pause button like slow-motion movement, put that pause button on every department of your life and hold it there, look at it closely and thoroughly, and see the implications of what you are doing; then wait on God in silence. Allow Him to search out your life. Definitely, God will speak a word of challenge or rebuke to you. Every part of your body has a spiritual counterpart.

SEVEN THINGS CAN HAPPEN TO ANY PART OF THE BODY IN THE SPIRIT.

  1. Sin.
  2. Bondage: when a part of the body is in bondage, there is limited use.
  3. Demonised with evil tenants in there. There could be a demon in the brain and not in any other part of the body. There could be a demon in the breast, in the womb, in the legs, and in the back.
  4. Evil marks, like evil signs.
  5. Evil deposits like arrows, darts, and leftovers by evil tenants.
  6. Curses.
  7. Evil covenants.

So when you are ready, start with your legs.

Isaiah 59:6-8 (KJV) says, “Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.”

Let us start with your legs. Your legs have stood in many places. They have taken you to school, markets, the house of God, prison, hospitals, even a pulpit to preach, a classroom to teach, to work, to get food, and to go to bed. Our legs are the means of our mobility. Press the pause button on them. Ask your legs these questions:

  • Are there ways in which your feet have run to evil?
  • As a Christian, does your manner of even driving your car glorify God?
  • Do you walk about spreading bad news and gossip? The Bible says, “How beautiful are the feet of them that bring good tidings…” In reverse, how ugly are the feet of those who spread gossip and slander.
  • How good are your feet as spiritual instruments? Or do you go astray and come back?
  • Are you going to the wrong places? It is with our legs we rush around different places.
  • Are your legs too busy hurrying to where you will be noticed, exalted, or acclaimed?
  • Are your legs cooperating with you in carrying out unwise decisions or selfish plans and activities? You need to pray to arrest any power of evil within your legs. The only time we hear of Jesus washing any part of the body is the legs. Allow Jesus to wash your feet today spiritually.

Many have demonised feet and legs, oppressed legs and feet, bad feet that bring bad luck and oppressed legs. The same way you subject your feet to a spiritual and physical checkup, you should likewise subject all organs of your body to the same checkup. You were not drunk when you went to that man’s house. You knew he was living alone.

After going there, they got you pregnant; you went again with the same legs to the doctor that would carry out an abortion. Your legs carried you to all those places. Just like you spend time on the legs, you go through other organs.

There are sick knees, thighs, sexual organs, kidneys, livers, and sick stomachs.

The God of some people is their belly. Many are scared about fasting. When you tell them, “Go and pray this prayer,” their next question is, “Sir, I hope it does not include fasting?” There is a problem in their body.

Examine your lungs, examine your heart. Your heart is the seat of your affection, will, discernment, and intention. The Bible says, ‘The heart of man is deep and desperately wicked.’ ” The heart can be deep and wicked. The Bible says, “The heart of man is deceitful above all things; who can know it?”

The heart can be lifted up, can be proud, can imagine mischief, can be perverse, can be rebellious, can be divided, can be secretly enticed, can be hard and adamant. The Bible even says that the heart can be mad. It can be lustful and can be slow. The Bible says that some are slow of heart to understand. The heart can be blind, can be wounded, and can backslide. It grieves God when the hearts of His people depart from Him.

Where your heart is clearly indicates the nature and whereabouts of your treasure. That heart is also the place of encounter with God. Ask yourself these questions now: What is the condition of my heart? What kind of thoughts do you allow? Press the pause button, look at it well, correct what should be corrected, and get information from God to enable you to correct it.

There are sick breasts. Many breasts have been held by strange hands and sucked by strange mouths. There is sick back: that is, no one can rely on you. There are sick shoulders: no one can depend on you, and you cannot be a burden bearer; that is, you are very selfish. There are sick hands. That is why Jesus’ hands were nailed to the cross.

Are your own hands crucified? Are they polluted? Does your hand fail at the edge of breakthroughs? Are you writing evil letters with your hands? Putting rings and doing evil with your hands? Put a pause on it and examine. There are sick necks. In the Bible, the neck is the symbol of pride. Are you very stubborn? Are you obstinate? Are you wilfully disobedient?

The Bible refers to the rebellious as sick necks. Do you stick to bad habits and refuse to change? Are you arrogant? There is also the sick throat and voice. A harsh voice is usually so because of the temperament of its owner. The voice can bring people to God. Also, the voice can bring people to the devil. There is the sick tongue. Another thing you must pause. The tongue is an enormous organ with powerful potential for good and evil. It is little but can do untold damage.

Do you tell lies, even business lies? Do you exaggerate? Do you distort the truth by concealing information? Is your tongue a weapon of murder? Do you disclose others’ secrets? Do you have the tongue for always complaining and grumbling?

Are you rude or offensive? Are there things you say and you are ashamed that your Lord and master will hear? Put a pause on this too. There are sick eyes. What do you fix your gaze on? There are sick ears. What do you listen to? Are you Mr. or Mrs. Big ears that anywhere rumours are circulating, your ears are picking it up? Do you have ears that listen to God? Put a pause button. Be quiet, identify those things and cry to God.

One man of God was running a church with no signs, no wonders, no miracles, testimonies or growth. He got angry in the spirit, and for the first time in his life, he went on a three-day dry fast. This is somebody that had never fasted a dry fast in fifteen years of running the church. To make sure he did it well, he locked himself, threw the key under the door and told his wife to lock him in until day three. He knew, himself, that if he smelt food, he would go out and eat. The wife said “very good” and kept the key. Day one, nothing. Day two, nothing. On day three, Jesus appeared in the room and said, “My son, do you want power?”

He replied, “Yes, Lord.” Jesus then declared, “Okay. If you want power, I must kill you.” He exclaimed, “Ah! Lord, I do not want to die.” Jesus spoke, “I must celebrate your obituary.” He exclaimed again, “Ah! No o! That is not why I fasted. I am sorry. ” Jesus then replied, “No. What I am telling you is that in your life, the flesh must die.” He then asked, “Ah, O Lord, how do I do that?” Jesus said to him, “Get pen and paper.” So he did. Jesus said, “Start writing,” and then listed thirteen things for him that were wrong with his life, and he wrote them down. Jesus said, “When you have addressed all these thirteen things, you do not need to pray for power; automatically power will come.”

Some of the things were easy and some were not. Like laziness in the place of prayer, anger and too much talking were easy to do. But the last two things Jesus mentioned were very embarrassing. So when Jesus left, the pastor memorised the last two points and rubbed them away because he did not want his wife to see them. But then he stuck this paper on the wall, one by one, and addressed it.

That of anger, he addressed. He began to learn that it is very easy to control anger. When you are angry, do not talk, and the anger will die. By the time he addressed the last one, power fell. His church became the largest in town because he examined himself and worked on himself.
